In the 15th Century the belief was wide spread that evil spirits lived in the forests. As legend would have it, they also believed that the trees maintained the most powerful of all the good spirits.

 

They believed that when the men went out to hunt for food and never returned that the evil spirits of the woods had taken them. So before entering the forest the hunters would knock on the trees to wake up the sleeping spirits to protect them.
 

This where the saying "Knock on Wood" or "Touch Wood" came from.
